June 2010 Indie Playlist

I’ll admit it – I’m a gal with eclectic (often bordering on weird) tastes in music. My iPod is a random assortment of tunes ranging from the best of Saint-Saëns to pretty much every Broadway cast recording ever to rockabilly – with pretty much everything in between.

Given my somewhat varied listening choices, it may come as no surprise to you that CD Baby is quite possibly one of my favorite sources for indie music.

In honor of my love for all things music, this is the first (of many, I hope) monthly roundups of some of the more interesting and notable albums I currently dig on CD Baby. So stay tuned (yep, pun intended) for this month’s finds!

June’s Indie Playlist ~

First up, I’m digging Groove Duke’s retro-soul single Stick Boy. It has an impressive horn section and a definitive funk feel. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t feel the need to get up offa that thing and dance every now and then?

Next is Red Red Sky by Beth Fitchet Wood. I’ll admit, folk-jazz wasn’t really a genre that was popular when I was growing up, but luckily my mom felt otherwise. When it was just the two of us at home, the strong and soulful vocals of Joni Mitchell were usually in the air.

That’s why I can instantly connect with Beth Fitchet Wood’s song style. She says the album took four years to make and was originally just live guitar and vocals, but I definitely appreciate the addition of banjo and mandolin on several of the tracks.

Check ‘em out if you like: Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Carole King

My third choice this month is Shorelines End’s alternative rock album Cold Summer Night. All five tracks are strong (though Lights Go Down is my personal favorite) and lead singer Patrick Alan’s vocals are perfect for this genre. Definitely a good choice for fans of pop-driven indie rock.

Check ‘em out if you like: The Fray and Matchbox Twenty

Shorelines End: Cold Summer Night

Last, but certainly not least, is the indie pop Swallows and Little Things by Little Things. It’s best described as quirky and slightly reminds me of the soundtrack to the film Juno. This album fits my definition of summer music perfectly – it’s light-hearted, catchy and upbeat.

Check ‘em out if you like: The White Stripes and Belle and Sebastian

Little Things: Swallows and Little Things

Thanks so much for mentioning my single. The boys in the horn section are particularly thrilled to be mentioned, they get so little love! (Except the sax player. He gets plenty.. go figure!)

The album should be out in early September. We’re pretty proud of it. It was entirely fan funded, a totally DIY project! If you are interested, you might keep an eye out for it.

    Thanks again,

    Groove Duke
